THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND PIANO COMPETITION “THE MUSIC OF THE CENTURY”

I. General information:
1. The third international “The Music of the Century” 2018 festival and competition, dedicated to contemporary piano music and chamber ensembles, is organized by the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School, The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, The Lithuanian Composers Union, The National University of the Republic of Costa Rica (Costa Rica UNA Eskuela de Musica) and The Institute of Superior Arts (Instituto Superior de Artes) of Costa Rica.
2. This international festival and competition will take place at the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School and The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre on 26 November – 2 December 2018.
3. The third  international festival and competition “The Music of the Century” is dedicated to establishing and developing the international and cultural relations between Western Europe (Lithuania) and Central America (Costa Rica).

II. The aims and tasks of the festival and competition:
4. The aim of the events is to promote international cooperation, covering the cultural-musical experience of the two continents, and to create an environment for a longlasting art experience with the help of creation and performance.
5. The tasks are:
5.1. to present and get acquainted with contemporary musical trends that are the most important for young performers
5.2. to reveal and develope the professional artistic and performance skills of young talents
5.3. to share useful information about creative and academic experience of different national schools and methods of tuition.

III. Terms and conditions of participation:
6. The participants of the festival and duration of program:
6.1. the various chamber ensembles and instrumentalist solo will perform two pieces of different character composed between 1918 and 2018. Over all duration of the program: up to 20 minutes.
7. The participants of the piano competition and duration of program:
7.1. Category A – participants up to 9 years old (born on 1st January 2009 and later). Duration up to 10 min.
7.2. Category B – participants up to 12 years old (born on 1st January 2006 and later). Duration up to 15 min.
7.3. Category C – participants up to  15 years old (born on 1st January 2003 and later). Duration up to 20 min.
7.4. Category D – participants up to  18 years old (born on 1st January 2000 and later). ). Duration up to 25 min.
7.5. Category E – participants from 18 years old and older (born until 31st December 1999). Duration up to 30 min.

8.The participants of the piano with orchestra competition and duration of program:
8.1. Category A – participants up to 9 years old (born on 1st January 2009 and later). Duration up to 10 min.
8.2. Category B – participants up to 12 years old (born on 1st January 2006 and later). Duration up to 15 min.
8.3. Category C – participants up to  15 years old (born on 1st January 2003 and later). Duration up to 20 min.
8.4. Category D – participants up to  18 years old (born on 1st January 2000 and later). Duration up to 25 min.
8.5. Category E – participants from 18 years old and older (born until 31st December 1999). Duration up to 30 min.

1. Gabriel  Morera Cordoba – „Juega“ ( „The Game“ )
2. Mario Alfaguell – „Otros Estudios“ ( The Other Etudes“ ) – ( will be chosen 3 etudes)
3. Patricia Molina Cerna – Piano Suite „Bribri“  Op. 36 ( will be chosen 3 pieces)

B category

(One piece by a Lithuanian composer has to be  chosen from 3 pieces).
1. Zita Bružaitė – „ Trys dedikacijos“   („Three dedications“) (will be chosen 1 dedication)
2. Nailia Galiamova – „ Polifoninis sąsiuvinukas“ ( „The little polyphonic book”) (will be chosen 2 pieces)
3. Giedrius Kuprevičius  – „ Samanėlių lopšinė“   („Lullaby of moss“)

Other repertoir is a free choice. Priority should be given to pieces written by Latin American and Baltic States composers and created since 1918.

8.7. Obligatory pieces for piano with orchestra category.
A Concert of Lithuanian composer or a Concert of a Costa Rican composer and one part of the freely chosen Concert created between 1918 and 2018.
Concerts are performed by two pianos.

V. The organizing of the competition:
9. The registration for the international festival and competition “The Music of the Century” will take place on 26 November 2018 between 1 and 4 p.m. at the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School. Those unable to take part in the registration must inform the organisers.
10. The opening of the international festival and competition “The Music of the Century” will take place on the 26th November 2018 at 6 p.m. in the concert hall of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Address: Gediminas ave. 42, LT – 01110, Vilnius.
11. The festival will take place on the 27th  November 2018 in the concert hall of the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School. Address: T.Kosciuska str. 11, LT – 01110 Vilnius. Exact time will be announced later.
12. The piano competition will take place on the 28th and 29th November  2018 in the concert hall of  the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School. Address: T.Kosciuska str. 11, LT – 01110 Vilnius. Exact time will be announced later.
13. The piano with orchestra  competition will take place on the 30th and 1st December 2018 in the concert hall of  the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School. Address: T.Kosciuska str. 11, LT – 01110 Vilnius. Exact time will be announced later.
14. The closing ceremony, presentation of awards and the gala concert of the international festival and competition “The Music of the Century” will take place on the 2nd December 2018 at 6 p.m. in the concert hall of the National M.K. Ciurlionis Art School. Address: T. Kosciuska str. 11, LT-01110 Vilnius.
15. The entry fees for the international festival and competition:
15.1. 60 euro for the competing piano soloists
15.2. 60 euro for the competing piano with orchestra soloists
15.3. 35 euro for every member of an ensemble taking part in the festival
15.4. 50 euro for performing pianists taking part in the festival and competition

16. Applications must be submitted to the organisers of the international festival and competition by post or e-mail by 15th October 2018 (by posting date or time of e-mail) .

17. One coloured photo of the participant (passport style) and the copy of his/her ID document must be attached to the application.
18. The participants will themselves cover all expenses of  accommodation, travel and catering. (The organisers have to be informed if hotel reservations are required).

19. The fee for two rehearsals and the performance with concertmaster upon demand for piano soloists with orchestra – 100 euro

20. The auditions for the competition and the gala concert may be broadcast on radio and television and, with the permission of the organizing committee, recorded into audio and video media without additional remuneration to the participants.
21. Masterclasses and seminars will take place during the international festival and competition. The timetable will be announced later. The fee for a participation in masterclasses and seminars – 15 euro.
22. The next international festival and competition of contemporary music “The Music of the Century” is expected to happen in November 2020 in San Jose, Costa Rica.

VII. The awards of the international festival and competition “The Music of the Century”

24. The participants will be awarded with diplomas and prizes.
25. The winners will be awarded with diplomas and special prizes.
26. The Grand Prix winner will be invited to play with an orchestra in  Kaunas State Philharmonic (Lithuania) and in the concert hall of San Chose (Costa Rica).
27. Other special prizes of sponsors are expected.

VIII. The competition jury
28. The jury will be composed of acknowledged Lithuanian and Costa Rican performers, composers and tutors.
29. The decisions of the jury cannot be appealed against.
